Improving Rural Services in Chad by Developing Agri-Entrepreneurship: Pilot Phase

IDH and Job booster chad entreprise

A landlocked country in Central Africa, Chad is a vast territory divided into three major climatic zones, including the Sudanian zone in the south, characterized by annual precipitation estimated at over 1000mm, making it favorable for agricultural activities despite increasing variability in rainfall over time and space, leading to production declines in these areas. Agriculture remains a key sector for Chad's economy, employing over 80% of Chadians, mainly in rural areas, and contributing 54% to GDP in 2021, although the sector's potential is not fully exploited.

Like most other economic sectors, agriculture in Chad is largely informal and unproductive. The high poverty rate in rural areas, where the population is heavily dependent on agriculture for income, illustrates the low productivity of this sector. This low productivity can be attributed to several factors, including the low level of structuring of producers individually and in groups, limited access to production and processing means, low market and financial access, and land degradation.

To provide effective and integrated solutions to the above challenges faced by rural populations in southern Chad, IDH and Cotontchad have partnered to create the landscape platform, which aims to strengthen the resilience of rural producers to various economic, social, and climatic shocks through three pillars: Production, Protection, and Inclusion. The Project for the Improvement of Rural Services through the Development of Agri-Entrepreneurship is one of the initiatives of this platform, involving the social enterprise Job Booster Chad.

Within the activities of this landscape platform, IDH has engaged the services of the social enterprise Job Booster Chad to support rural (aspiring) entrepreneurs in developing sustainable agricultural and non-agricultural enterprises with viable business models providing local agricultural and non-agricultural services/products. Specifically, the service aims to support 100 rural producers in creating/structuring and managing agricultural and non-agricultural micro-enterprises in the target provinces of Logone Oriental and Mayo Kebbi Est. This support includes training in personal development and leadership; entrepreneurship training including personalized business coaching; training in local product processing techniques and their marketing; and investment preparation for these micro-enterprises. All these supports will be offered through the Business Support Center located in Doba and Gounou Gaya, managed by entrepreneurship facilitators. The project exclusively supports existing entrepreneurial initiatives and aims to guide them towards enhanced productivity and competitiveness.
